OUR MISSION

The American Legion strives to promote a better understanding of the principles of democracy and to instill among all people a higher appreciation of the benefits of American citizenship. To serve the needs of all veterans and their families. To fulfill our commitment to community, state, and nation.

OUR VISION

The American Legion is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization founded on the values, contributions and sacrifices, of those who have answered the Nations call to arms, therefore we must: Respond to quality of life needs of all veterans and their families; Prepare each generation to meet its citizenship obligations; Maintain a strong national defense; Perpetuate the principles of government embodied in the United States Constitution, Be a values-based organization committed to serving God, country, community, and every veteran today, tomorrow, and throughout the 21st Century. The American Legion’s success depends entirely on active membership, participation, and volunteerism. The organization belongs to the people it serves and the communities in which it thrives.

In 1919, The American Legion was founded on four pillars: Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation, National Security, Americanism, and Children & Youth. Each of these pillars encompasses a variety of programs that benefit our nation’s veterans, its service members, their families, the youth of America and ordinary citizens. These programs make a difference in hundreds of thousands of lives each year. Our organization’s positions and programs are guided by resolutions passed by American Legion National Convention delegates, and committee and commission members who represent 2.6 million wartime veterans and their families. These programs and the men and women who take the time to perform them are what allow The American Legion to make a difference locally, on the state and national levels. It’s who we are and what we do.

The American Legion Family consists of the American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, Sons of the American Legion and The American Legion Riders. Our family supports our veterans, our communities, and our children.
